A CFL consists of a coiled tube filled with mercury vapor and argon gas. When electricity passes through the tube, it excites the mercury atoms, causing them to emit ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light then interacts with a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, converting it into visible light. CFLs are available in various shapes and sizes, including spiral or helical designs.
The primary advantage of CFLs is their energy efficiency. They require significantly less electrical power compared to incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light, resulting in lower electricity bills and reduced environmental impact. Additionally, CFLs have a longer lifespan, typically lasting up to 10 times longer than traditional bulbs.
Despite their energy-saving benefits, CFLs have some limitations. They require a brief warm-up period to achieve full brightness, and their initial cost may be higher than incandescent bulbs. Moreover, CFLs contain a small amount of mercury, which poses a potential environmental hazard if not disposed of correctly.
In recent years, CFLs have been gradually replaced by more advanced and environmentally friendly light sources like LED bulbs. Nevertheless, CFLs played a vital role in promoting energy conservation and shifting towards more sustainable lighting options.
