A cathode ray tube (CRT) is a type of electronic device used to display images on a screen. It consists of a vacuum-sealed glass tube containing three main components: an electron gun, deflection plates, and a fluorescent screen. The electron gun emits a stream of high-speed electrons, known as cathode rays, towards the screen. These electrons are initially focused into a narrow beam by an electron lens.
The deflection plates, which are situated near the screen, control the position of the electron beam by applying electrical signals. These signals cause the beam to move horizontally and vertically, allowing it to scan the entire screen and form the desired image. The fluorescent screen, located at the front of the tube, is coated with a phosphor material that emits light when struck by the electrons. This creates the visual display that the user sees.
CRTs were once widely used in television sets, computer monitors, and oscilloscopes. Their advantages include excellent color reproduction, high contrast ratios, and low latency response times. However, they are bulky, heavy, and consume significant amounts of energy compared to newer display technologies such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). As a result, CRTs have become largely obsolete and are gradually being replaced by more advanced display technologies.
