The term "catfishing" originated from the world of online dating. It can be traced back to the 2010 documentary film titled "Catfish", directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. The documentary followed a young man, Nev Schulman, as he developed an online relationship with a woman he met on Facebook, who turned out to be completely different from who she claimed to be.
The term "catfish" came from a story within the documentary, where the protagonist's brother spoke about how cod fishermen would transport live catfish in the same tanks to help keep the cod agile during transport. He compared this to someone creating a fake identity online to deceive others.
