Native to the southern regions of Africa, this bird is commonly found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, open woodlands, shrublands, and human-inhabited areas such as gardens and parks.
The Cape sparrow is characterized by its distinct appearance with a plump body measuring approximately 14 centimeters in length. It has a stout bill, a short tail, and rounded wings. The coloring of this species varies between males and females. Males display a black crown, a grayish-brown back, and a brown chest. They also have a white wing stripe and a yellowish patch on their cheeks. Females, on the other hand, have a duller appearance with brown overall plumage and a lighter stripe above the eye.
These sparrows are known for their versatile feeding habits, primarily consuming seeds, insects, and fruits. They are often seen foraging on the ground in small groups or forming larger flocks, especially during the non-breeding season.
When it comes to breeding, Cape sparrows are monogamous birds, with pairs building cup-shaped nests in shrubs or trees.
