The Burgas Region is a geographical and administrative area located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria. It is one of the 28 regions, or oblasts, in the country and has its namesake in the city of Burgas, which is the regional capital. Spanning approximately 7,748 square kilometers, the Burgas Region borders the Black Sea to the east and is surrounded by three other Bulgarian regions: Yambol to the northwest, Sliven to the west, and the municipality of Primorsko to the southwest.
The Burgas Region is known for its diverse landscapes, which include the Black Sea coast, vast plains, hills, and the Strandzha Mountain Range. It contains several significant natural sites, such as the Ropotamo and Veleka River deltas, the Atanasovsko Lake, and the Poda Nature Reserve, which provide habitats for various rare and protected plant and animal species.
The region is also renowned for its cultural heritage, boasting several archaeological sites, ancient remnants, and historical landmarks. Notable places of interest include the ancient cities of Sozopol and Nessebar, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as the Thracian tomb of Kazanlak and numerous monasteries and churches.
Economically, the Burgas Region is driven by a diverse mix of industries, including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation. The Port of Burgas, situated on the western coast of the Black Sea, is a major economic hub and a key transportation gateway, serving as a significant seaport for Bulgaria and its neighboring countries.
