The bundlesheath consists of compactly arranged cells, located just beneath the outermost layer of cells called the epidermis. These cells surround and enclose the vascular bundles, which contain xylem and phloem tissues responsible for the transport of water, minerals, and organic nutrients throughout the plant. The bundlesheath usually acts as a protective and supportive layer for the vascular tissue.

These cells contain numerous chloroplasts and are responsible for the second step of carbon fixation and subsequent carbohydrate synthesis. This separation of initial and final steps into separate cell compartments is made possible by the presence of the bundlesheath layer.
