The broad tapeworm, scientifically known as Diphyllobothrium latum, is a species of parasitic tapeworm that infects humans and various fish-eating mammals. It is one of the largest tapeworms that can infect humans, reaching lengths of up to 30 feet (9 meters).
Broad tapeworms have a flat, ribbon-like body consisting of multiple segments called proglottids. Each proglottid contains both male and female reproductive organs, enabling self-fertilization. The head of the tapeworm, known as the scolex, possesses suckers and hooks that allow it to attach itself to the intestinal walls of its host.
The life cycle of the broad tapeworm involves multiple hosts. It begins with eggs being released into freshwater by an infected mammal through their feces. In freshwater, the eggs hatch into larvae, which are then consumed by crustaceans. Fish consuming the infected crustaceans become intermediate hosts. When humans or other fish-eating mammals consume the infected fish, the larvae develop into adult broad tapeworms within their intestines.
Infections caused by broad tapeworms, also known as diphyllobothriasis, often occur due to the consumption of raw or undercooked fish that harbors the tapeworm larvae. Usually, the infection remains asymptomatic or causes mild digestive symptoms. However, in severe cases, it can lead to nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin B12 deficiency, anemia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss.
