Boocercus eurycerus is a species of large antelope native to the forests and savannas of central and western Africa. Commonly known as the bongo, it is the largest among the forest-dwelling antelopes. The bongo is characterized by its robust build, with a shoulder height ranging from 1.1 to 1.4 meters and a weight of 150 to 400 kilograms. Its most distinctive feature is its striking reddish-brown coat, adorned with vertical white stripes that help camouflage it within its dense woodland habitat.
The bongo possesses large, spiraled horns that curve backward, growing up to 80 centimeters in length. Only the males bear these magnificent appendages, which are used for territorial combat and display during mating rituals. Their diet primarily consists of leaves, grasses, fruits, and bark, which they forage for in small groups or individually.
Due to habitat destruction and hunting pressure, the boocercus eurycerus population has experienced a decline, causing it to be classified as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Conservation efforts are focused on protecting its shrinking forest habitat and curbing illegal hunting to ensure the long-term survival of this magnificent species.
