Bombax ceiba, commonly known as the red silk cotton tree, is a majestic tropical tree that belongs to the family Malvaceae. This deciduous tree is native to the tropical regions of Asia, including India, Myanmar, and Thailand, and is also found in parts of Africa and Northern Australia. It can reach impressive heights of up to 60 meters (200 feet) and has a wide girth, with a trunk diameter often exceeding one meter (three feet).
The Bombax ceiba tree is characterized by its striking appearance, with a stout, straight trunk and large, spreading branches that form a broad crown. Its bark is grayish-white, smooth when young, but gradually becoming rough and cracked as it matures. During its blooming season, the tree showcases brilliant, showy flowers that are typically red in color, although variations in pink, white, and orange can also occur. The tree is also renowned for its fruits, which are distinctive elongated capsules filled with numerous seeds that are embedded in a fluffy, cotton-like fiber. This fiber, known as kapok, is used for various purposes, including stuffing pillows, cushions, and life jackets, and is especially valued for its buoyancy and insulation properties.
