Established as a government-owned entity, BNFL played a significant role in the production, processing, and supply of nuclear fuels, as well as the management and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
During its existence, BNFL operated numerous nuclear sites, including Sellafield in Cumbria, which served as a major nuclear fuel reprocessing and waste storage facility. The company was responsible for converting spent nuclear fuel into reusable materials and handling radioactive waste management.
BNFL was divided into several divisions, each with distinct responsibilities. Its nuclear fuel division focused on producing enriched uranium and mixed oxide fuel for both domestic and international nuclear reactors. The company's services division offered specialized engineering and consultancy services to the global nuclear industry.
Aside from producing nuclear fuel, BNFL also played a vital role in the decommissioning process. As older nuclear sites reached their end of lifespan, the company was responsible for dismantling and decontaminating these facilities, ensuring their safe closure and environmental restoration.
Due to various factors, including financial difficulties and concerns over nuclear safety, BNFL's operations were gradually scaled down until its formal closure in 2009. Today, the remnants of the company's activities are managed by different entities under the supervision of the UK's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).
