Etymology of BLAST PHASE
The term "Blast Phase" originates from the medical field, specifically in relation to a type of blood cancer called chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The etymology of the word "blast" in this context comes from the Greek word "blastos", meaning "germ" or "bud".
In CML, the disease progresses through three phases: chronic phase, accelerated phase, and blast phase. The chronic phase is characterized by an overproduction of immature white blood cells called myeloid cells. The accelerated phase represents a more aggressive form of the disease, where the abnormal cells begin to accumulate and replace healthy cells.
