Known for its dark brown or black coloration, this beetle measures approximately 2.5 to 3.8 mm in length and possesses a distinct densely hairy appearance. Its body is elongated, covered in tiny scales, and adorned with a mixture of black and brown colors or iridescent patterns.
The black carpet beetle is widely distributed and commonly found worldwide, including North America, Europe, and Asia. It predominantly resides outdoors but is known to infest homes, where it seeks out various organic materials for sustenance. This beetle feeds on a wide range of materials, including carpets, wool fabrics, hair, feathers, pet fur, dead animals, and even certain food products.
The presence of black carpet beetles in homes can be detrimental, as their larvae cause significant damage to textiles and other materials. These larvae, commonly referred to as woolly bears or grub worms, have elongated and carrot-shaped bodies covered in bristle-like hairs.
