Bituminisation is a process used in waste management and nuclear decommissioning to immobilize and contain radioactive or hazardous waste materials. It involves incorporating the waste into a solid matrix by mixing it with bitumen, which is a viscous, black, and sticky form of petroleum. This enables the waste to be stored safely and prevents its dispersal into the environment.
The bituminisation process typically involves blending the waste material with bitumen, either through a hot or cold mixing method. This mixture is heated to a high temperature to ensure proper incorporation of the waste into the bitumen. The resulting product is a solid mass, commonly referred to as bitumen wasteform or bitumen composite. This wasteform effectively traps the radioactive or hazardous constituents, immobilizing them within the bitumen matrix.
Bituminisation offers several advantages as a waste management technique. The bitumen wasteform has excellent resistance to water, chemicals, and mechanical stress, which enhances the long-term stability and containment of the waste. It also provides a high degree of thermal insulation, preventing the escape of heat generated by radioactive decay. Additionally, bituminisation can be performed onsite, which reduces transportation and disposal costs associated with the waste.
However, it is important to note that bituminisation is not considered a final disposal option for radioactive waste. Rather, it serves as an interim measure until a permanent disposal solution is implemented.
