Axions are hypothetical subatomic particles that have been proposed in particle physics to explain certain phenomena related to the behavior of the strong nuclear force, specifically the strong CP problem and the excess CP violation. The strong nuclear force is one of the four fundamental forces in nature, responsible for holding atomic nuclei together. The strong CP problem arises from the observation that the strong force does not appear to be symmetrical when the charge-conjugation and parity symmetry operations are applied to it.
Axions are postulated to be very light, neutral particles, potentially with zero or nearly zero mass. Due to their low mass and neutral charge, they interact weakly with other particles, making their detection challenging. In fact, they are considered to be excellent candidates for dark matter, which is thought to make up a significant portion of the universe but has not been directly observed.
The existence of axions would provide a solution to the strong CP problem by introducing a new fundamental symmetry called PQ symmetry. This symmetry would prevent a certain type of CP violation in the strong nuclear force, bringing it in line with observed experimental results. However, despite several experimental efforts to detect axions, they have not yet been observed, and their existence remains purely hypothetical.
