AUI, acronym for Attachment Unit Interface, refers to a physical network interface standard that was popularly used in Ethernet networks during the early days of computer networking. It was developed as part of the original Ethernet specifications and defined the interface between the network adapter card (also called network interface card, NIC) and the transceiver. AUI was introduced in the 1980s and allowed for greater flexibility in connecting various transmitters and receivers to Ethernet network cards.
The AUI interface typically consisted of a 15-pin D-shell connector on the network card, allowing the attachment of a transceiver cable. This cable was used to connect the AUI port of the network card to a transceiver unit, which was responsible for modulating and demodulating the signals between the network media and the Ethernet adapter. AUI provided a more standardized way to connect different types of networking media (such as coaxial cable or twisted pair) to a network interface card, promoting interoperability between various equipment manufacturers.
Despite being widely used in the past, AUI interfaces have mostly been replaced by newer and more compact interfaces, such as the RJ-45 connector used in Ethernet ports today. However, the AUI interface remains an important part of networking history and was instrumental in the development of Ethernet as a widely adopted networking technology.
