Asaphus is a genus of extinct trilobites belonging to the order Asaphida, which lived during the Middle and Late Ordovician periods, approximately 472 to 444 million years ago. These arthropods were among the largest trilobites, growing up to 12 centimeters in length.
The name "Asaphus" is derived from the Greek words "asa," meaning shield, and "phos," meaning light, referring to the calcified exoskeleton that formed a protective shield-like structure covering their bodies.
Asaphus trilobites had a distinctive appearance, characterized by a rounded, semi-circular body shape known as a "cephalon," which was divided into furrows and ridges. The exoskeleton was segmented, with distinct head, thorax, and tail sections. The head typically had large, compound eyes on either side, and a pair of long antennae extended forward. The thoracic segments consisted of jointed limbs used for swimming and crawling, while the tail section was tapered, often with a long, spine-like projection.
Asaphus trilobites were marine organisms that inhabited shallow seas, where they likely scavenged for food on the seafloor. Fossilized remains of Asaphus have been found in various regions around the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia.
