Artificial Urinary Sphincters (AUS) are medical devices designed to treat urinary incontinence by providing voluntary control over the flow of urine. They are typically used in cases where the natural urinary sphincter has become dysfunctional or damaged, leading to urinary leakage.
The AUS consists of several components, including a cuff, a pressure-regulating balloon, and a pump. The cuff is placed around the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. When the patient wants to urinate, they manually press the pump, which deflates the cuff, allowing urine to pass through. After urination, the cuff automatically re-inflates, effectively closing off the urethra and preventing involuntary urine leakage.
The pressure-regulating balloon is connected to the cuff and helps maintain an appropriate pressure within the system. It can be adjusted to ensure the optimal functioning of the sphincter. The pump, usually located in the scrotum for men or in the labia area for women, is the external control mechanism for the AUS. Patients can activate the pump as needed to control urinary flow.
Artificial Urinary Sphincters have proven to be effective in managing urinary incontinence in both men and women. They provide individuals with greater control and enhanced quality of life, reducing the embarrassment and discomfort associated with urinary leakage.
