It involves the injection of a contrast agent into the joint of interest, which improves the visibility of the joint structures during imaging procedures, such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The main purpose of an arthrogram is to provide detailed information about the bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues that form the joint. By injecting the contrast agent into the joint, the procedure highlights abnormalities, such as inflammation, tears, fractures, or degenerative changes that may not be clearly visible without the contrast.
During the arthrogram, a radiologist or a trained medical professional guides the contrast agent's injection using fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or CT guidance, depending on the joint being examined. The contrast agent fills the joint space, allowing for clearer visualization of its internal structures. Once the contrast agent is in place, the joint is imaged using the appropriate technique, often with the patient in different positions to assess joint stability, range of motion, or specific structures.
Arthrograms are commonly used to diagnose joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis, ligament or meniscal tears, labral tears in the shoulder or hip, or cartilage abnormalities. The procedure is generally safe and well-tolerated, but like any medical procedure, it may involve some risks, including infection, bleeding, or allergic reactions to the contrast agent. Arthrograms can be an essential tool for guiding treatment decisions, surgical planning, or monitoring the effectiveness of certain interventions in patients with joint pathologies.
