Apparent Hermaphroditism refers to a condition in which an individual presents ambiguous external genitalia that do not clearly align with typical male or female characteristics at birth. This condition is a result of a disorder of sexual differentiation during fetal development.
In individuals with apparent hermaphroditism, there may be inconsistencies between the chromosomal, gonadal, and phenotypic sex. Chromosomal sex usually refers to the presence of XX chromosomes in females and XY chromosomes in males, but it can vary in this condition. Gonadal sex describes the presence of ovaries in females and testes in males, but in individuals with apparent hermaphroditism, there may be ambiguous or atypical gonads.
