Antechinus subtropicus is a species of small marsupial mammal belonging to the family Dasyuridae. Also known as the subtropical antechinus, it is endemic to Australia and specifically found in the subtropical rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland.
The Antechinus subtropicus has a compact and slender body, with a head and body length of approximately 10 – 12 centimeters and a tail length of 8 – 10 centimeters. It has a pointed snout, short ears, and a dense, soft fur that varies in color from greyish-brown to dark brown, providing camouflage in its natural habitat. Males are typically larger and heavier than females.
This species is characterized by its unique reproductive behavior known as "suicidal mating." During the mating season, the males engage in intense and prolonged mating sessions, which result in their immune system being compromised. As a result, they experience high stress levels and a rapid decline in health, often leading to their death shortly after mating.
The primary diet of Antechinus subtropicus consists of insects, small invertebrates, and occasionally fruits and seeds. They are predominantly nocturnal and spend their days nesting in tree hollows or leaf litter on the forest floor.
Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Antechinus subtropicus is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts, including habitat protection and restoration, are crucial for the survival of this unique and intriguing species.

The species name "subtropicus" is derived from Latin and refers to the ecological region where this particular species of antechinus is found, namely the subtropics. The word "antechinus" itself has an interesting etymology. It stems from the Greek words "anti", meaning "opposite" or "across from", and "ekhinos", meaning "hedgehog" or "spiny animal". This name was given to the antechinus due to its resemblance to a small spiny animal or a hedgehog.
