Angiomas refer to a group of benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in blood vessels. These growths are composed of a cluster of abnormal blood vessels that can be visible on the skin or found internally. The term "angioma" is derived from the Greek words "angeion," meaning vessel, and "oma," meaning tumor.
There are different types of angiomas, each classified based on their location or appearance. Some common types include cherry angiomas, spider angiomas, and senile angiomas. Cherry angiomas, also known as Campbell de Morgan spots, are bright red or purple lesions that typically develop on the trunk or limbs. Spider angiomas are characterized by a central red spot with blood vessels radiating outwards, resembling a spider's shape. Senile angiomas, also called cherry angiomas of aging, are similar to cherry angiomas but tend to occur more frequently in older individuals.
Angiomas can vary in size, shape, and color, ranging from tiny pinpoints to larger, raised bumps on the skin. They can occur anywhere on the body, including the face, scalp, arms, legs, and trunk. While most angiomas are harmless and primarily a cosmetic concern, some may cause discomfort or bleeding if irritated or injured.
Depending on the location and individual characteristics of the angioma, treatment options can include laser therapy, cryotherapy (freezing), or surgical excision. It is important to note that if any angioma undergoes significant changes in size, shape, color, or becomes painful, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.
