Angeiectasis is a medical term used to describe the abnormal enlargement or widening of blood vessels, particularly veins, in the body. It is often seen as a result of various underlying medical conditions or as a primary disorder.
When blood vessels experience angeiectasis, they lose their normal elasticity and start to dilate or expand beyond their usual size. This dilation can occur in any area of the body, including organs, tissues, or skin. Common areas where angeiectasis is observed include the legs, face, hands, or other parts of the body.
The causes of angeiectasis can vary and can be attributed to different factors. The word "Angeiectasis" is derived from two roots: "angi(o)" and "ectasis".
1. "Angi(o)" refers to the blood vessels or the vascular system. It comes from the Greek word "angeion" (ἀγγεῖον), meaning "vessel" or "container".
2. "Ectasis" is derived from the Greek word "ektasis" (ἔκτασις), which means "expansion" or "dilation".
Combining these two roots, "Angeiectasis" can be understood to mean the expansion or dilation of blood vessels or the vascular system.
