In Egyptian belief, after death, a person's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice. If the heart was found to be pure and lighter than the feather, the deceased would proceed to the Field of Reeds, a paradise-like realm. However, if the heart was heavy with sins and impurities, it would be devoured by Ammit.
Ammit is typically depicted as a monstrous creature with the head of a crocodile or lion, the front limbs of a lioness, and the hind legs of a hippopotamus. She is often shown crouching beside the scales of justice, awaiting the outcome of the judgment.
