An alpha cell adenoma consists of a benign or malignant tumor that forms within these alpha cells. It typically causes abnormal overproduction of glucagon, leading to an excess amount of this hormone circulating in the bloodstream. This can result in a variety of symptoms, including an increase in blood sugar levels, weight loss, skin rash, gastrointestinal disturbances, and malabsorption.
The exact cause of alpha cell adenoma is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic mutations in the pancreas cells. It is mostly seen in individuals between the ages of 50 and 70, although it can occur in younger individuals as well.
Diagnosis of alpha cell adenoma involves a combination of clinical presentation, blood tests to measure glucagon levels, and imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT) scans or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A confirmatory diagnosis is usually made through a biopsy of the tumor tissue.
Treatment options for alpha cell adenoma may involve surgical removal of the tumor, medication to manage symptoms and mitigate hormone overproduction, and targeted therapy for advanced or metastasized cases.
