Alnus Crispa is a species of deciduous shrub or small tree commonly known as the Crisp-leaf alder. It belongs to the family Betulaceae and is native to North America, particularly found in regions of eastern and western North America extending into Alaska.
The Crisp-leaf alder typically grows up to 30 feet (9 meters) in height, with a rounded crown and a moderately sized trunk. It is characterized by its alternate, elliptical, serrated leaves that are dark green in color and have a distinctive wrinkled or crinkled appearance, which gives rise to its common name. The leaves are about 1.5 to 4 inches (4 to 10 centimeters) long and turn yellow in the fall.
This species is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers are borne on separate trees. The male flowers are in the form of catkins, hanging down from the branches during springtime, while the female flowers are smaller and appear as upright clusters. Once pollinated, the female flowers develop into cone-like structures containing tiny winged seeds known as nutlets.
Alnus Crispa is characterized by its ability to form symbiotic relationships with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in its root nodules, allowing it to enrich the soil with nitrogen.
