"All grain" is a term often used in the context of beer brewing and refers to a specific method of producing beer. In an all-grain brewing process, brewers typically start by milling malted grains, such as barley, into a fine particle size, which exposes the starches within the grain kernels. The crushed grain is then mixed with hot water in a vessel called a mash tun. Through the process of mashing, enzymes in the grains are activated, converting the starches into sugars. This mixture, known as the mash, is carefully maintained at specific temperatures to encourage enzymatic activity and optimize sugar production.
After the mash, brewers separate the liquid portion, known as wort, from the grain solids through a process called lautering. The wort is collected in a kettle and then boiled, during which hops are typically added to impart bitterness, flavor, and aroma to the beer. Once the boil is complete, the wort is cooled and yeast is added, initiating fermentation.
All-grain brewing is considered by many to be more advanced and time-consuming compared to other brewing methods, such as extract brewing, as it requires more equipment and expertise.
