Derived from the Greek terms "a-" meaning without and "karyon" meaning nucleus, it signifies the absence of a defined nucleus or membrane-bound organelles in these organisms.
Akaryotes are typically unicellular organisms that lack the typical cellular features found in more complex life forms, such as animals, plants, or even other single-celled organisms like prokaryotes or eukaryotes. Instead of a true cell, akaryotes exist as a simple aggregate of genetic material enclosed within a protein coat.
