The disease is characterized by severe itching, rash, and redness of the skin due to the mite's bites or feeding activity. The trombiculid mites, also known as chiggers, are barely visible to the naked eye, measuring about 0.2 to 0.4 mm in length. They typically attach themselves to the human body, usually around areas such as the waist, ankles, armpits, or groin, to feed on the skin cells and tissues.

Prevention of akamushi disease primarily involves avoiding contact with the trombiculid mite-infested areas, especially during peak seasons when mite populations are high. Protective clothing, insect repellents, and frequent body inspections are recommended preventive measures.
