Ahir refers to a community or caste predominantly found in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. The term "Ahir" is derived from the Sanskrit word "abhir" meaning "fearless" or "high" and is associated with the cow-herding occupation.
Traditionally, Ahirs were primarily engaged in animal husbandry and played a significant role in the economy as dairy farmers, shepherds, and cattle traders. They are known for their expertise in breeding and tending to cattle, particularly cows. Ahirs are often considered to be part of the larger Yadav community, which includes several other dynastic and martial castes in India.
Ahirs have their own distinctive cultural traditions, religious practices, and social customs. They generally follow Hinduism and worship Lord Krishna, who is believed to have been a cowherd. The community holds an annual festival called Govardhan Puja, where they pay homage to Lord Krishna and offer prayers for the well-being of their herds and agricultural prosperity.
