The African python, scientifically known as Python sebae or Python natalensis, is a large non-venomous snake species found primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. As one of the largest snake species in the world, the African python can grow to impressive lengths, averaging between 3.5 to 5.5 meters (11 to 18 feet) and weighing up to 60 kilograms (130 pounds), although exceptional individuals have been known to surpass these measurements.
The African python is characterized by its muscular body, broad head, and distinctive scale patterns. Its coloring is highly variable, ranging from olive-green to brown, with darker blotches that help it camouflage within its natural habitat. This species is primarily terrestrial but is also known to climb trees and swim when necessary.
African pythons are primarily nocturnal hunters, using their heat-detecting pits and excellent sense of smell to locate prey such as small to medium-sized mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles. They are also known for their constricting abilities, capturing prey by wrapping their bodies around it and squeezing until it succumbs to asphyxiation.
These snakes are oviparous, meaning they reproduce by laying eggs. Female African pythons lay clutches of up to 60 eggs, which they incubate and protect until the hatchlings emerge after approximately two to three months.
The African python is highly valued in the illegal wildlife trade due to its size, beauty, and the belief in some cultures that it possesses medicinal or spiritual properties.
