AFRC, also known as the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, refers to a military government that emerged in Sierra Leone in 1992. The term AFRC can also be used to describe the organization or the council itself. This abbreviation is commonly used in the context of Sierra Leone's political and military history.
The AFRC came into existence following a military coup in April 1992, led by a group of young army officers. Their goal was to overthrow the government in power and establish a new regime based on their own revolutionary ideology. The AFRC, as a military council, held significant control over the country's political affairs and implemented changes in governance, including the suspension of the constitution and the dismissal of elected officials.
During its existence, the AFRC regime faced significant domestic and international opposition due to its repressive policies and disregard for human rights. The council's rule was characterized by political repression, social instability, and widespread human rights violations, including the displacement of civilians and atrocities committed against the population.
The AFRC's reign was relatively short-lived as it was later toppled by a joint military intervention led by the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) and a faction of the Sierra Leone Army, known as the Sierra Leone Army loyal to the civilian government. The AFRC's overthrow marked the end of its control and eventually led to the restoration of civilian government in Sierra Leone.
