Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare type of malignant tumor that arises from the acinar cells of the salivary glands. The acinar cells are responsible for producing and secreting enzymes in the saliva. This cancer predominantly occurs in the parotid gland, the largest of the major salivary glands found in the cheek area, but it can also affect the submandibular and sublingual glands.
Acinic cell carcinoma is characterized by the uncontrolled growth and division of abnormal acinar cells, which form solid clusters or acini-like structures. These cells are typically cuboidal or low columnar in shape and possess abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm. The tumor may show a range of architectural patterns such as microcystic, papillary, trabecular, and solid, and often has a well-differentiated appearance.
Clinically, acinic cell carcinoma usually presents as a slow-growing, painless, and firm mass in the affected gland. It can sometimes be mistaken for a benign tumor due to its relatively indolent behavior. However, it has the potential to spread to nearby lymph nodes and, in rare cases, to distant organs, particularly in advanced stages.
The diagnosis of acinic cell carcinoma is confirmed through microscopic examination of a tissue sample obtained by a biopsy. Additional testing, such as immunohistochemistry and molecular studies, may be performed to determine the specific characteristics of the tumor and guide treatment.
Surgical removal of the tumor, which may involve total or partial gland removal, is the primary treatment for acinic cell carcinoma.
